WYOMING, MICH. - One of the women recorded with a secret bathroom camera says she forgives her Wyoming landlord.
“Because that was the right thing to do,” explains Emily Wondolowski.
On Thursday, July 27, 31-year-old Benjamin Crawford was sentenced to 30 days in jail for installing a hidden camera to secretly record two female tenants using the bathroom at his Wyoming home.
“I noticed this shiny red in the corner of my eye,” recalls Wondolowski. “I look and I realize it’s a camera and my stomach dropped because I realized someone was filming."
“I’m very sorry for everything I’ve done,” Crawford told the judge before sentencing.
While examining Crawford's computer, police say they found a video clip showing Wondolowski getting in and out of the shower.
“This is my girlfriend,” says Samuel Stout. “I was very angry. I wanted to confront him. I actually did go up to Ben and asked him why he did this. He said he kept it for inappropriate reasons and he is truly ashamed for what he did and he can never describe how truly sorry he is.”
Shortly after he was charged with capturing an image of an unclothed person, Crawford’s wife Chelsea was killed by a hit and run private snow plow driver.
“And she meant everything to him,” says Wondolowski. “He would have done anything for her and he lost her in a terrible accident.”
Wondolowski and Stout wrote to the judge, asking him to impose the “absolute minimum sentence possible.”
“While I understand and appreciate the fact of the tragic loss of your wife in January of this year, those events happened well after you installed a camera surreptitiously in a bathroom to capture images of two women who were tenants in your home,” pointed out Judge Dennis B. Leiber. “You will do three months in the county jail. The harm and the horror require incarceration.”
The other female tenant in the house was also recorded in the bathroom, but apparently always wearing clothing.
“The only footage he ever got was me stepping out of the shower,” says Wondolowski. “I was the victim. I forgave him. It’s done and over with.”
