Woman gets prison for apartment complex stabbing death

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - A Grand Rapids woman has been sentenced to prison for a fatal stabbing last summer at an apartment building in the city's Heartside neighborhood.

Kawonda Mendez, 36, was sentenced to between 10 and 45 years in prison in the death of a man identified as her boyfriend.

The August 1 stabbing followed a heated argument in a third-floor unit of The Globe Apartments on Commerce Avenue.

40-year-old old Scott Morton died from a stab wound to the chest.

Mendez pleaded no contest in March to second-degree murder. She claimed Morton had been abusive towards her.
