Dog shot after eating neighbor's cat food, family says

Family dog recovering after being shot

MONTCALM COUNTY, MICH. - Izzy is a 1-year-old Labrador Retriever mix and an emotional support animal, which helps Jenn Treece's daughter cope with anxiety.

The good news is after surgery, a draining tube and stitches, her owners say she's almost back to her normal playful self.

Izzy's 10-acre stomping grounds is equipped with an invisible fence, that means her battery-powered collar will vibrate or buzz if she gets too far. Treece said she didn't realize the battery to her collar had died and therefore was able to escape to her neighbor's yard.

"I did confront the neighbor and he admitted that he had shot at her and then when I gave him the vet bill and told him he was going to help us pay for it, he decided to change his story numerous times which made me even more angrier. So he had already admitted it and I told him I was going to call the sheriff back which is a hard decision to make because he's a friend of the family," Treece said.

Treece believed that the entire situation could have been avoided had her neighbor communicated with her that Izzy had gotten into his cat food.

She said she would have replaced the cat food without a problem, but shooting Izzy wasn't the answer.

"If he had said something we would have been like, 'Okay, we didn't know she was out of the yard,' we would have come and got her, we would have replaced the cat food no problem, we would have put her on a tie-out just to make sure she stayed in the yard until we got a battery," Treece said. "

If he would have said something the whole thing could have been avoided. Just talk, if there's an issue-any sort of issue, be the bigger person and go and say something instead of taking matters into your own hands.

Treece started a Go Fund Me page to help pay for her dog's treatment. The remainder of the funds raised she says will be donated to the animal memorial fund sponsored by State Road Animal Hospital.
