Driver charged in Grattan Township crash that killed passenger

ROCKFORD, MICH. - A driver has been charged with causing a July accident east of Rockford that killed a 19-year-old passenger and injured several others.

Mara Kay Moore, 46, is charged with moving violation causing death. She has a hearing this week in 63rd District Court on the misdemeanor charge which is punishable by up to a year in jail.

The accident occurred about 4:30 p.m. on July 15 on Gavin Lake Avenue NE just south of Belding Road (M-44) in Kent County’s Grattan Township.

Moore, of Clarksville, and four passengers were treated for minor injuries. The crash killed 19-year-old Makayla Rochelle Cefalu of Lakeland, Fla.

Kent County deputies say Moore was northbound on Gavin Lake Avenue when her 2001 Chevrolet Blazer left the road and struck a tree. Passengers included three children, ages eight months, 6 and 8 and a 20-year-old woman from Clarksville.
