Drunken driver falls asleep, crashes into elderly couple's home

GENEVA TOWNSHIP, MICH. - A 56-year-old Geneva Township man has been arrested after driving while intoxicated and crashing into the side of an elderly couple's home Thursday night.

According to the Van Buren County Sheriff's Department, the incident happened around 11:30 p.m. on Thursday night on County Road 388, near 66th Street in Geneva Township.

Deputies say a 56-year-old man was driving while intoxicated and fell asleep at the wheel of his pick-up truck, he crashed into the side of an elderly couples home.

When deputies arrived, the driver and truck were gone. Both were found a short time later not far from the area. 

According to deputies, the driver passed his own home, drove through the stop sign and intersection, left the roadway and crashed into the couple's home. Neither of the homeowners were injured. 

The driver was arrested for operating while intoxicated and is being held at the Van Buren County Jail. This case will be sent to the Prosecuting Attorney's Office for further review.
