Camp prepares GRPS students for kindergarten

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- The transition to kindergarten is important, especially for students who have not had a formal pre-school experience. For that reason, Grand Rapids Public Schools, First Steps, and the Great Start Collaborative of Kent County are continuing a program to make that transition as smooth as possible.

KinderCamp is being offered this week at four GRPS elementary schools for free.

One of the teachers, Joy Bauer, explained that students attend "so that when they come in, they don't have so much anxiety about being at school. It kind of prepares them emotionally, socially, and academically; it gives them a quick glance of what kindergarten's all about."

The district says, "children who participate in KinderCamp will receive backpacks and other supplies for school. Their parents will receive home organizers, parenting information and other tools that will help them ensure that their child's education gets off to a great start."

Parents attend the program for three of the five days.
