Grand Rapids launching free civics program for students

Our City Academy

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - The City of Grand Rapids wants new residents to better understand and participate in local government.

So, the city is working with Grand Rapids Public Schools to launch a new program called OurCity Academy.

There will be six workshops over the next three months, in which students can learn about all aspects of city government.

"I can't imagine going to a new place and not understanding how to navigate systems," said GRPS Superintendent Teresa Weatherall-Neal. "This absolutely will be one barrier that will be removed and so we've partnered on so many things in the past but this is one that is right."

"We welcome people in Grand Rapids and we want people to live and work and play in our city, we want newcomers to feel that this is their place."

Enrollment for the free civics program is now open on the City's website.
