Fire causes Ionia building to collapse, forces residents to evacuate

IONIA, MICH. - Investigators in Ionia are trying to determine the cause of a fire that caused a building to collapse.

Public safety officers say they got the call around 2:20 a.m. on Sunday for a fire at the former Lower Bros. Building, located at East Bluewater Highway (M-21) and Stage Road.

When crews got there, both floors on the building's east side were fully involved. According to a Facebook post by the Ionia Department of Public Safety, parts of the building had already collapsed earlier on, making it difficult for crews to fight the fire.

Nine additional fire departments were called in for assistance.

There were no reports of any injuries, however Ionia County Victim's Advocates will be assisting the residents that were living in the building.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, however it is actively being investigated.
