Fire chief dies after being hit by car on I-94

COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP, MICH. - Comstock Fire and Rescue Chief Edward Switalski has died after being hit by a car while responding to an accident on I-94 near Kalamazoo.

Kalamzoo County deputies say it happened Wednesday, June 13 around 9:30 p.m. as firefighters were looking into a reported accident on the freeway near Sprinkle Road.

When they arrived, firefighters say no one was in the car and no one had been reported hurt. But as they were clearing the scene, a driver lost control and hit Switalski.

Several first responders tried to help the chief, but he died on the scene.

The at-fault driver was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for injuries.

It's not clear what caused that driver to lose control.
