GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - No injuries were reported following a standoff in Grand Rapids that lasted more than three hours. It started at a home on 8th Street NW near Turner Avenue NW.
Police were called to the home around 9:10 p.m. Friday after a man called them to say he had a gun and was planning to kill himself and his hostages before he hung up the phone.
Officers surrounded the home and attempted to talk with the man before he barricaded himself inside and refused to talk any more. Police say during the three hour stand off, the suicidal man threatened to commit suicide by cop more than once.
Officers blocked off a large area around the home in order to keep the public at a safe distance from the suicidal man, and to better be able to use and manage their resources.
He eventually spoke again to crisis negotiators after several attempts were made to contact him through the PA system. While talking with them over the phone, he admitted he was in the home alone.
The suspect surrendered to police around 12:30 a.m. Saturday morning and was taken into custody.
