Mold closes Harper Creek Community Schools

BATTLE CREEK, MICH. - Harper Creek Community Schools in Battle Creek are closed after mold was found on the carpet inside three Harper Creek Middle School classrooms.

According to Calhoun County, mold was first found on the carpet inside one classroom Wednesday afternoon, then it was discovered inside two more classrooms Thursday.  The carpet was cleaned and sanitized immediately. Friday a sample of the mold was tested and it was found that two of the three rooms had high levels of the Pen/Asp spore group, two of the most common groups of mold encountered in homes and outdoors which is caused by high humidity.

Certified technicians have been hired to remove the affected carpets and clean the classrooms.  Air quality samples will be taken Saturday, with the results expected Tuesday.

In the meantime Harper Creek Middle School will remain closed until the test results confirm it is safe for students and staff.  All Harper Creek Community Schools, including before and after school childcare, will also be closed so that all campuses can start on the same day.
