(WZZM) - Nationally, 13% of American adults smoke. In West Michigan, every county exceeds that number.
Muskegon County tops the list with 27 percent of adults saying they smoke. Allegan and Newaygo Counties come in a close second and third followed by Kent County at 18 percent and Ottawa County at 16 percent.
Some suggest electronic cigarettes are a safer option than normal cigarettes, but some in the medical community say they are not getting rid of the root problem, the nicotine addiction.
Laura Van Heest is a respiratory therapist with Saint Mary's Health Care. She also runs the tobacco free program there and she talks about the e-cigarette and other trends in tobacco.
