What is The Wege Institute for Mind, Body and Spirit?
For over a decade, Mercy Health Wege Institute for Mind, Body and Spirit has been one of the largest and most experienced integrative health programs in the United States. With a mission of offering effective, individualized care for the mind, body and spirit, we both complete and enhance mainstream medical care by partnering progressive complementary therapies with mainstream medical services and practitioners.
What types of services are offered at Wege Institute?
Our medically-licensed professionals specialize in holistic health care, such as acupuncture, massage therapy and aromatherapy.
What holistic services do you offer for breast cancer patients?
Massage therapy offers many benefits to breast cancer patients – it lessens anxiety, relaxes muscles, and increases endorphins for natural pain relief. As an inpatient therapist I am seeing an increase in surgeons ordering massage therapy to aid in pain relief due to positioning during long procedures such as mastectomies. Kinesiology tape is another option for post-surgery pain following reconstruction surgery. Inpatient therapy gives patients other options besides medication, breaks up their day, brings smiles to the faces even if it just our touch or our listening ear.
Can holistic therapies be used to complement radiation and chemo therapies?
Studies are being done that show an increase in the emotional well-being of patients receiving massage during chemo and radiation treatments. It's important to have a therapist who has worked with cancer patients before so they know how to customize your treatment, how to position you on the table, and when to integrate other services such as acupuncture for nausea or aromatherapy for stress relief.
