Update on Grand Rapids mother battling breast cancer

Early detection is the key to beating breast cancer.

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - We have an update on this Friends for Life Day on the Grand Rapids mother we first met in our May report.

Tamika Birch had just finished months of strong chemotherapy and was getting ready to have a double mastectomy. She underwent that surgery on May 23.  However, she had some complications and had to have two more unplanned surgeries.

The most recent was on Saturday, June 10.

Birch is now home from the hospital and is doing well. Throughout her journey Tamika's pink boxing gloves are helping her to visualize "knocking out cancer." She also uses humor, laughter and focuses on her four children to help her in her fight.

Tamika still faces radiation treatments and reconstructive surgery in the coming months. Her daughter, Kori, says nothing will take away her "sass and smile."

The family has a "Go Fund Me" page to help with uncovered medical expenses.  https://www.gofundme.com/tamikaknockoutcancer

We'll continue to follow her progress and update her journey.
