Summer safety tips for your family

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - Summer is a time for fun -- but every summer, approximately 2.7 million children in the U.S. ages 14 and under are treated in emergency rooms for accidental injuries.

Injury prevention experts from Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital say more children are accidentally injured during the summer months than any other time of year.

Stephanie Flohr, Manager of the Trauma Program at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, stopped by to talk about summer safety and how to keep your family safe this summer at home or on vacation.

Some of her tips include:

  • Stay out of cold water.
  • Watch out for heat stroke.
  • Drink water, not diet cola.
  • Know your prescriptions.
  • Wash fruit or veggies.
  • Don't leave kids alone in the car.
