(WZZM) - It's time to start thinking about back to school and that also means getting your child an exam for the upcoming sports season.

A lakeshore hospital is once again offering free student athlete heart screenings.

The initiative is in its second year, and Blair Moreau from Mercy Health in Muskegon talks about the importance of the screenings.

The High School Student Athlete Heart Screening Program attempts to identify any pre-existing heart conditions.

The screenings take place at the Youngberg Auditorium on the Hackley Campus of Mercy Health. Each screening takes about 15 minutes.

Each student will complete the following steps:
- Check In
- Healthy heart check history questionnaire and blood pressure check
- 12-lead EKG
- Physician review
- Echocardiogram, if indicated
- Check out review

Parents can register their child for the screening online using the link above. The website contains the consent form and the questionnaire. Both must be signed by a parent and brought to the screening.
