You may have to see a specialist about your skin throughout your lifetime but chances are items in your kitchen cabinets can help fight off blemishes and beyond.
Depending who you ask, the foundation of having clear skin may start with healthy living.
Common home remedies for clear skin include oatmeal, honey, avocados, cucumbers, sea salt to to name a few.
Some medical doctors have slightly different opinions on what matters most when it comes to clear skin. "I think the most important thing is to wash your face before you go to bed," says Dr. Elizabeth Meade of Swedish Hospitals. "I think the old kind of evidence about 'don't eat greasy foods, don't eat chocolate, don't eat dairy'-- we really haven't found that that makes a significant difference for skin clearance." However, Meade is quick to point out that staying hydrated, eating well and getting sleep will contribute to healthier looking skin.
Alexa Moffat works at West Seattle Natural Medicine, where she has now become a believe in naturopathic care. She says she watches what she eats because she believes it ends up coming through to her complexion.
"That would, for me, be dairy," says Moffat. "And sometimes when I do [eat] that, I'll have a couple spots on my skin or I'll have some acne."
- 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 Tablespoon honey
Mix ingredients until smooth. Gently apply to face and wash off after 15 minutes.
