Bus driver wants school's tattered flag replaced

MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. (WZZM) -- The American flag flying at Martin Luther King Junior Elementary School is frayed and tattered and barely hanging onto the flag pole. A school bus driver says he wants to see action taken, so he called the WZZM 13 Information Center.

Dale Kanouff drives the head start bus and says the school's flag has been that way for five weeks, but no one seems to care. Kanouff says he went to the principal's office to point out the problem and suggest a solution, but the flag is still flying in the school yard. He calls it neglect and disrespect that sets a poor example for the children.

"The kids are getting off the bus, they are looking at that flag and they see it just hanging there-- it's just not right," Kanouff told WZZM. He says the harsh winter weather had left the flag hanging by just a chain.

Kanouff suggested the American Legion or VFW come out and properly dispose of the flag. He also would like to see the flag brought down at night, in keeping with the Federal Flag Code.

"It's a symbol of our country, of freedom you know? We have men men and women every day dying for that flag and here it's disrespected."

Martin Luther King Junior Elementary School is violating several elements of the Federal Flag Code, which provides guidelines and rules for the display of the flag. However, code violators are not arrested, fined or otherwise punished.
