Kentwood Ramada temporarily closed down by city for safety issues

KENTWOOD, MICH. - A Kentwood hotel that was the subject of a WZZM 13 On Your Side report has been temporarily shut down by the city.

The Ramada Plaza at 3333 28th Street is closed because of apparent safety issues.

Back in May, we told you about a bride who had to find another venue two weeks before her wedding. Now, another has come forward with the same problem.

"It was a total nightmare," says Estel Bruwer.

She booked the Ramada Plaza a year and a half ago for June 3. The hotel is undergoing major renovations and is set to become a Marriott this summer.

"Other than the fact that we saw the story about the lady a week before, that gave us kind of a clue what was going to happen, but he (Ramada manager) didn't give any indication that they would not be hosting our wedding," Bruwer said.

Bruwer says she now knows that when they went in for their final meeting, the hotel had already been shut down. The day after WZZM’s first story aired, on May 23, Kentwood officials conducted an electrical inspection.

The next day, Kentwood issued Ramada a notice that the hotel was unfit for occupancy because of several safety concerns, including issues with the fire suppression system and elevators.

"A week before the wedding? You've got to be kidding," Bruwer said.

The Ramada Plaza arranged to have her daughter's reception at the Grand River Hotel in Grand Rapids. The venue was able to pull it together on short notice, but considering what the family went through;  Bruwer hopes someone is held accountable for their mistakes.

"It was mishandled, not professional," she said. "I've been in customer services and this would not fly. It's just wrong."

National Hospitality Services, the hotel's management company, sent WZZM this statement about the issue: "The Ramada Plaza hotel is currently going through a multi-million-dollar renovation to better serve the community and our guests. While it is our goal during any renovation to keep the hotel open so that we can continue to serve our guests, the owners and management of the hotel understand and appreciate the concerns that the city has raised and are complying in every way to ensure the safety and well-being of our guests and employees. Our management team and construction contractor are working closely with the city to ensure a quick and successful completion of this project and to reopen the hotel with a great new look that both inside and out, better amenities and best in class guest experience that will be a great new addition to the city of Kentwood and Grand Rapids."
