Ken's fruit market fire caused by arson

Plainfield fire ruled arson

GRAND RAPIDS TOWNSHIP, MICH. - Firefighters say arson is what caused a popular Grand Rapids area grocery store to catch fire early in the morning on Thursday, Sept. 8, 2016.

It happened around 4 a.m. at Ken's Fruit Market near the corner of Plainfield Avenue and 4 Mile Road.

Investigators say when they arrived on the scene some hay bales outside the store were on fire. The flames had spread to the awning above.

Damage from the fire was contained to the exterior of building, however, smoke and water damage was found in Ken’s, Africa’s Child, Big Lots. 

Firefighters from Grand Rapids, Ada and Plainfield townships all assisted in putting out the flames.

You could be eligible for up to $5,000 for providing information leading to the arrest and/or conviction of an arsonist.
