COOPERSVILLE, MICH. - During this winter break, while you're spending some extra time with you kids, you may want to talk to them about bullying.
A Coopersville business owner is encouraging that very thing, while trying to find an answer to the bullying problem.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services nearly 50% of kids from 4th to 12th grade reported being bullied by another student at least once during the past month.
"My oldest had always been picked on her first couple years of school," Sarah Veeneman, a Coopersville parent said. "It's just heart breaking because she's the sweetest little girl."
Veeneman found herself sending her kids to the Coopersville Pro-Karate School for Ed Taylor's bullying seminar.
"We took the class and just the past week my oldest put it to use and she was so proud of herself that she could get this person to back off of her," Veeneman added.
Ed Taylor first started this course back in 2010.
"When I post something about a bully seminar at a karate school, everybody automatically assumes it's going to be about fighting, it's such a small part of these clinics," Taylor said.
Since 2010, the Chief Instructor has continued the courses sporadically, providing non-physical ways to deal with bullies.
"We talk about verbal de escalation, boundary setting, body language, how to carry yourself assertively, and how to carry yourself with confidence."
This holiday break, Taylor is offering Bully seminars for 5 to 13 year olds. An opportunity to give a gift that could make a major difference.
"If you can take one child and empower them to get through this? It's worth any time I'll ever put in, without a doubt," Taylor added.
