2 hurt after running from police and crashing near Ionia

IONIA COUNTY, MICH. - A man and a woman are in serious but stable condition after crashing an SUV during a police chase.

It happened late Wednesday night, Sept. 21, 2016. Michigan State Police investigators say they were told to be on the lookout for the driver of a black SUV who hit a parked car and then drove away, fleeing from Ionia officers.

Around 20 minutes later, at 9:50 p.m. a state trooper saw that vehicle on the north side of the city and tried to get the driver to pull over. But again, the driver took off.

The SUV was headed east on Nickelplate Road when the driver lost control and crashed near Stage Road. Investigators say the vehicle rolled before coming to a stop in the brush along the road.

Ionia firefighters were able to pull the driver, a 36-year-old man, and his passenger, a 42-year-old woman, from the vehicle. They were taken to Sparrow Hospital in Ionia where they're being treated.

Investigators say both suspects were wanted on outstanding warrants.

The vehicle involved in the chase and crash was registered to a third party from Lowell.
