State aims to increase recycling rate

CASCADE TWP., Mich. (WZZM) - Governor Snyder is on a mission to double the level of recycling in our state.

As part of that, the state's Environmental Quality Director, Dan Wyant, toured Cascade Engineering Friday morning. The company is known nationwide for its use of recycled materials and innovations in recycling techniques.

Right now, about 15% of Michigan's waste stream is recycled and we trail other Great Lakes states. Wyant says Michigan is wasting more than $400 million a year by not reusing more materials.

Cascade Engineering's Fred Keller says there's no reason why Michigan can't be a national leader in boosting recycling.

He said that would go especially well with the state's Pure Michigan brand.
