GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) - Despite the weather conditions almost 1500 athletes competed in the 5th annual Grand Rapids Triathlon Sunday morning.
The event was held in Ada around Thornapple River. It's the largest triathlon in Michigan. Competitors took part in one of three distances the Sprint, Olympic, or Half-Iron event.
Athletes swam, biked and ran in the rain as some competed to qualify for the National Championship.
"I'm competitive. I like to win. Really I like to feel strong and confident and that's where it comes from. Like I love that feeling of feeling strong, feeling confident and crossing that finish line. It was a great feeling," says Courtney Jones.
There were 35 different states represented at the triathlon. The youngest competitor was just 13 years old.
