ArtBeat to rock unique Grand Rapids neighborhood during ArtPrize

ArtBeat to rock Grand Rapids neighborhood

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - The Monroe North Business Association, in partnership with Square Peg Events, presents "ArtBeat," an opportunity to experience, explore and feel the beat of the Monroe North Business District.

Slated for Saturday, Sept. 24,2016, this energetic neighborhood party is designed to immerse participants in the experiential spirit of ArtPrize in one of Grand Rapids' recently revitalized neighborhoods that is experiencing a renaissance of commerce, culture and fun.

The all-day free event will feature an afternoon of family-oriented activities followed by an evening of adult-oriented adventures.

Planned happenings include art stations for all age groups, large-scale outdoor games (including Jenga, chess, Connect Four, bean bag tosses and others), self-guided neighborhood tours, merchant promotions and specials, raffle prizes, street performers, steam-punk-themed human sculptures, artists painting, pub-cruiser tours, a pub crawl and a variety of live music headlined by the highly sought-after high-energy rock trio Magna Sonik.

"This event is about more than just walking through ArtPrize," said Cynthia Hagedorn, executive director of Square Peg Events. "It's about engaging in it. That's why we have the large games, the human sculptures, the street performers, the art stations. You can watch artists and you can be an artist. It's about immersing yourself into the adventure of ArtPrize and experiencing it from a different perspective."

Participants will start their experience at "ArtBeat Central" on Ottawa Avenue between Mason and Newberry streets, where they will find an information table — with self-guided passport passes, pub-crawl wristbands, neighborhood maps, a schedule of events and more — and from there explore the various happenings throughout the revitalized former industrial neighborhood of North Monroe.

Located at the center of the experience is Grand Rapids Garage Bar & Grill, 819 Ottawa Ave. NW, a trendy eatery featuring American grub, craft beer and cocktails in an easygoing atmosphere. The Garage will serve as the starting point for ArtBeat participants as well as the location of the human sculptures, acoustic guitarist Jason Eller who will perform inside the tavern from 1 to 4 p.m., and the outdoor stage for the headlining performance by Magna Sonik at 8 p.m.

ArtBeat will run from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Family-oriented activities are scheduled from 1 to 8 p.m. (art stations close at 5 p.m.), with adult-oriented activities slated for 8 to 11 p.m. While most activities are free, there will be a nominal charge for some events and activities, such as the pub cruiser and pub-crawl wristbands.
