Angela Cunningham tells us about the special approach to ArtPrize going on at Meijer Gardens this year.

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - The countdown continues. ArtPrize Eight gets underway in less than a week.

Thousands of people will descend on the 170 venues featuring works of art, including Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park. Starting Friday, Sept. 16, visitors will get an early look at the ArtPrize exhibition feature at Meijer Gardens.

It's titled "Almost Home: Grand Rapids in Focus." Joseph Becherer, Chief Curator and Vice President of Exhibitions and Collections calls it a, "special connection to the city and has offered an original reflection on it.”

13 artists were chosen based on their special connection to the Grand Rapids area. Each was asked to create a new work highlighting their experience in the city.

Beginning Friday, Sept. 16 "Almost Home: Grand Rapids in Focus" will be on display as Meijer Gardens’ fall exhibition through Dec. 31, 2016.

"This community was built on rich traditions, but it also is experiencing dynamic cultural and economic growth—this exhibition honors this," said Becherer. "All sculptures and installations were created specifically for this exhibition, reflecting the social and historical, industries and enterprises, the natural and the creative forces that helped shape Grand Rapids.”
