Dog dies in Saturday house fire in Battle Creek

BATTLE CREEK, MICH. - A Saturday night fire heavily damaged a home on Battle Creek's north side.

Battle Creek firefighters were called at 5:50 p.m. to 65 W. Meadowlawn Ave. and found the fire inside the single story home, Battalion Chief Matt Beauchamp said.

No one was home at the time and Beauchamp said the fire was reported by a neighbor.

Beauchamp said a dog was found dead inside the house.

He said it appears the fire began in the ceiling of the basement but the exact location and cause remain under investigation by Fire Marshal Quincy Jones.

Access to the fire was hampered by a large hole that had burned through the floor in the center of the house, Beauchamp said.

No estimate of damage was immediately available. City records show the house, built in 1947, is owned by Charmia Wyrick.
