Driver fleeing police dies after crashing car

BATTLE CREEK, MICH. - Police in Battle Creek are investigating after a driver, while fleeing police, crashed their car and died.

Early Sunday morning at around 3:30 a.m., an officer observed a vehicle driving at a high rate of speed while swerving all over the roadway. The vehicle was originally observed in the area of Capital Ave. S.W. near Christy Ave. The officer was able to catch up to the vehicle in the area of S.W. Capital Ave. and Golden Ave.

The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, however the driver fled at a high rate of speed. According to a BCPD, the vehicle fled east bound on Golden Ave. in a reckless manor, running several red lights and stop signs. The vehicle then lost control  near S. Raymond Rd. in Emmett Township.

After crashing, LifeCare and Emmett Township Department of Public Safety fire rescue were called to the scene. The driver of the fleeing vehicle succumbed to the injuries from the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The name of the driver is being withheld until family can be notified and will be released at a later time.

Emmett Township DPS is assisting with the accident reconstruction and the investigation remains open at this time.
