Two apartments left with extensive damage after morning fire

Battle Creek apartment fires

BATTLE CREEK, MICH. - A fire early Saturday damaged two apartments in a building at 52 Willow St. in Battle Creek.

Firefighters were called at 2:10 a.m. and said they found heavy fire and smoke at the back of the two-story wood frame structure. Fire Marshal Quincy Jones said the fire began in an attached garage and spread to the second floor and attic.

The house was divided into two apartments and both were occupied, firefighters said. Damage from the fire, smoke and water was extensive but a damage estimate was not available.

Jones was at the scene early Saturday and said a preliminary investigation suggested an accidental cause.

One firefighter was treated at the scene for heat exhaustion but no other injuries were reported.
