BBB warns of pool contractor not finishing jobs

HUDSONVILLE, Mich., (WZZM) - The Better Business Bureau has issued a consumer alert about a pool contractor not finishing jobs.

The company is called Doughboy Construction, owned by Jack McCoy. The BBB says it's received several complaints about the company over the past few months.

Julie Roche was one of them. "It was always an excuse, always an excuse". Roche says there were two months of delays. The process started in April when she went to a local pool dealer, who recommended an installer, named Jack McCoy. "He said he's heard good things about him, he gets it done."

On April 29th, Julie says she hired McCoy to install their pool. She paid him $2500 to get started. As they waited for pool parts, McCoy excavated the back yard. Julie says several days went by, with no work. There was some rain and the back yard, flooded. "So, the deep end was filled, it was a muddy mess, mosquito infested, horrible."

Shortly before Memorial Day, the parts arrived and McCoy left them in her back yard. After that, Julie says he kept delaying the job. "We found out he doesn't have a contractor's license either, so that was a big red flag too."

Julie fired McCoy. "I would say we are out about 4,500 to 5,000 dollars."

When WZZM 13 News contacted McCoy he admitted that he is behind schedule on several jobs. He blamed it on the rain. He said he is doing the best he can, to keep up.

As for Julie, she bought a new pool, and got it installed by someone else. They plan to sue McCoy for the money they lost in the deal.

"It's horrible for us, but I don't want to see anybody else go through it", says Roche.
