HESPERIA, MICH. - A 4-year-old boy was critically injured around 6 p.m. Monday, June 5, when he was hit by a car on M-20 near Dickinson Avenue.
The Newaygo County Sheriff's Department on Tuesday said the child remained in critical condition. Investigators did not release the boy's name. He was airlifted by Aero Med helicopter to a Grand Rapids hospital.
Investigators believe the boy entered the road where he was struck by a westbound vehicle. Police say the driver of the car was a 62-year-old Fremont man.
Deputies say alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.
Brenda Bixby runs a home daycare near the site. She worries all the time about the speed of vehicles that pass her home. Another neighbor says numerous children live in the area. Many walk along the road to get to stores in Hesperia.
"(Drivers) need to be aware to slow down because there are a lot of kids around here," Tracy Bulson said..
The speed limit on that section of M-20 is 55 mph.
The crash remains under investigation.
