GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Many Indiana businesses have opposed religious freedom restoration in their state, saying it would be bad for business. Business leaders for Michigan has taken no stand on similar legislation in the Wolverine State.
Doug Rothwell, the group's CEO, said Thursday: "The religious freedom bill - we've not talked about that at all - but my guess would be is that our members would say, 'Jeez, we ought to be spending more time focusing on ways to grow the economy than on issues like that.'"
Republican state senator Peter MacGregor of Rockford said Thursday he expects no action on religious freedom legislation until after May 5, when voters decide Proposal One for road funding. After that, however, he expects the plan will get a hearing, despite Governor Snyder's pledge Thursday to veto such legislation.
