Cat saving teen spends a day with local veterinarians

Blue Pearl honors teen who rescued cat

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - The West Michigan teen who saved a cat thrown from a van into moving traffic was honored once again for his heroism.

Blue Pearl Animal Hospital welcomed Gavin Orlowski, 14, of Grand Rapids to shadow veterinarians for the day. While there, the staff gave Orlowski and his family gift baskets.

Erin Brown, Orlowski's mother, shared the moment on her Facebook page:

On. Feb 12, Orlowski rescued a cat named Lucky who was thrown out of the window of a white van onto I-196. Orlowski and his mother, took Lucky too Blue Pearl for treatment after they rescued him from the highway.

Orlowski says he planned on becoming a veterinarian before the incident, but since saving Lucky, he is even more determined to make that happen. Veterinarians at Blue Pearl let Orlowski shadow them, letting him see what happens at the hospital on a typical day.

Orlowski says Lucky is adjusting well to his new home.

"He's been great -- he's a great cat. He eats a lot and sleeps with him every night," Orlowski said.

Last week, peta2, the youth affiliate of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), featured Orlowski on its Heroes page. peta2 also sent Orlowski a framed certificate and vegan catnip for Lucky.
