GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - Mel Trotter Ministries is asking the community for help collecting food for those in need. The annual Turkey Drop starts today, Wednesday, Nov. 16.
From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Mel Trotter has set up drop-off locations at Celebration! Cinema North, Celebration! Cinema South and the Mel Trotters Ministries downtown Grand Rapids for donations.
The goal for the first day of the Turkey Drop is to receive 1,500 frozen turkeys -- so far, Mel Trotter has received more than 1,000 -- including cash donations.
People are encouraged to drop-off turkeys and nonperishable food items to help meet their 50,000-pound food goal.
Mel Trotter also states that monetary donations are also encouraged at donate.meltrotter.org
The food drive has been extended until the end of the year because of a food shortage, having only collected 5,000-pounds thus far.
The food drive will officially end Dec. 31. The turkeys and other food items would be given out to families in need during the approaching holiday season, Mel Trotter says.
