Students skip the ride, join 'Walking School Bus' instead

Campus Elementary students walking together

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - A Grand Rapids Public School is promoting health, safety and school attendance through a new campaign, starting today.

Students, parents and staff members are participating in a "Walking School Bus" at Campus Elementary School on Thursday, Dec. 1.

The Walking School Bus campaign was designed to allow students to walk together to school with adult walking leaders. A committee of parents, neighbors, staff and the Kent County Health Department reviewed the list of student addresses and created a route to best accommodate the greatest number of students.

The route started at the corner of Thomas Street and Neland Avenue, and ended at Campus Elementary School.

School officials say the main goal is to ensure students are healthy and happy and will continue to encourage students to walk to school with their peers.

Campus Elementary plans on making this a weekly event on Thursdays at 7:30 a.m.
