Dash cam video shows deadly crash in Allegan County

PLAINWELL, Mich. (WZZM) -- Surveillance video released Tuesday to WZZM 13 News shows the moments leading up to a wrong-way crash on U.S. 131 in Allegan County.

The head-on collision happened 12 a.m. Wednesday, south of M-89. A pick-up truck going the wrong way in the southbound lanes collided with another car, killing both drivers and injuring a passenger.

WZZM 13 filed a Freedom Information Act to obtain dash cam video from the Michigan State Police.

The video shows one of the troopers turning around, following the truck, and almost immediately he sees it crash.

The two vehicles go up in flames instantly. The troopers race out, then back to their cars for fire extinguishers. They moved quickly to get the female passenger out of the Mustang safely, the vehicle hit by the wrong-way driver.

"I got to get you out, your car's on fire. Let's go, climb out of here, help us!" the MSP trooper told the Megan Covey, 26, of Wayland. She was taken to Borgess Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

She was the only survivor. Her driver, 21-year-old Jaryd Ford, of Plainwell, died in the collision. The pickup's driver, 29-year-old Jeremy Smeltzer of Portage, died while being flown to Borgess Hospital.

The entire video is 45 minutes, and includes verbatim of the troopers talking about nearly being hit by the driver.
