The fire is north of Brown Road near Joslyn Road, near the border with Auburn Hills. The Orion Township Fire Department and Consumers Energy representatives are on the scene, according to the release from Oakland County Undersheriff Michael McCabe.
"All of the Sheriff’s Office 911 lines and non-emergency lines are out," the release said. "The public can call 248-858-4930 for any emergency in lieu of calling 911. Please only call for emergencies at this time until our 911 lines are restored."
Auburn Hills police have tweeted a photo of the scene and ask that people stay clear of the area.
"We are responding to a report of a gas fire in the vicinity of Brown Road in Orion Township," said Consumers Energy spokesman Roger Morgenstein. "That's all we know right now. We have an emergency crew headed to the scene."
