Off-duty Wayne Co. sheriff's deputy fatally shoots intruder in her house

DETROIT, MICH. - An off-duty Wayne County sheriff's deputy fatally shot an armed intruder early Saturday morning who had broken into her house in southwest Detroit, police said.

The deputy told police that she was inside the house on the 1400 block of Beatrice Street when, around 1:30 a.m., she heard someone kick in a door and enter inside.

The deputy then grabbed her weapon and fired shots at the male intruder, who was in his 30s, armed with a pistol and wearing a black ski mask.

The bullets struck the intruder in the chest and heart, Detroit police said. Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene.

The name of the sheriff's deputy was not released. A statement from the Wayne County Sheriff's office said the deputy will be assigned to administrative duties pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
