Driver admits he might have fallen asleep before fatal crash

JAMESTOWN TOWNSHIP, MICH. - A 37-year-old man is dead after a head-on crash Wednesday, Sept. 21 in Ottawa County.

The Byron Center man, identified by police as Jason Alexander, was driving a Chrylser minivan around 8 a.m. on Byron Road, east of 48th Avenue, when an oncoming Chevrolet truck crossed the center line and crashed into him.

The driver of the truck, 21-year-old Matthew Lubbers of Grandville, told police he might have fallen asleep before the accident. He was uninjured.

An early investigation revealed the victim tried to brake, but was unable to avoid the collision. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

His identity will not be released until his family is notified.

The crash remains under investigation by the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department.
