Elderly couple killed in Ottawa County accident identified

Crockery Twp., Mich. (WZZM) The Ottawa County Sheriff's Department has identified an elderly couple killed in a crash on Apple Drive Friday afternoon.

The victims are 88 year old Robert Schmidt and his 87 year old wife, Erika.

Investigators say the Schmidt's were driving down Apple Drive in Crockery Township around 1p.m. Friday afternoon when their Honda CRV crossed the center line. Police say it then slammed into a truck driven by 61 year old Paul Whiteman.

The Schmidt's were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities say they were both wearing their seatbelts and the airbag did deploy. Whiteman suffered minor injuries and was treated at Hackley Hospital.

Police say the roads were wet with some icy patches at the time of the accident and there was slushy snow along the center line. The accident remains under investigation.
