'Erratic' man killed after charging trooper with pipe

MARION, Mich. (WZZM) -- A Michigan State Police trooper shot and killed a man acting erratically after investigators say he charged the officer with a pipe.

The incident happened around 12:30 p.m. near the intersection of M-115 and 20 Mile Road in Osceola County.

The trooper was responding to a car on its side, against a house. There, the officer found Eugene Kailing, 43, of Hersey frantically running around.

A witness said Kailing was armed with a metal pipe and the officer tazed him but it had no effect. The man continued to rush toward the officer and he was fatally shot.

This incident remains under investigation. An autopsy is being conducted Thursday in Grand Rapids.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or saw Kailing either July 14 or 15 is asked to contact the Michigan State Police Mount Pleasant Post at (989) 773-5951.
