Fire causes partial evacuation at Gerber Hospital

FREMONT, Mich. (WZZM) -- Patients are back in their rooms after a fire at Gerber Memorial Hospital.

It was reported around 4 a.m. Wednesday at the Spectrum Health facility at 212 S. Sullivan near downtown Fremont.

About 19 patients were evacuated from the hospital's third floor.

Firefighters reported heavy smoke from a mechanical fire in an elevator shaft. They were able to put out the fire in less than 45 minutes.

Crews from Newaygo, White Cloud and Holton Townships assisting in putting out the fire and in the evacuation. Patients were taken to the hospital's emergency department until the smoke had been cleared from the building,
