Aaron Young murder trial begins in Grand Haven

Young is on trial for the murder of a 22-year-old.

GRAND HAVEN, MICH. - Opening statements were heard Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 5 for the trial of Aaron Young. Young has been charged with open murder for the killing of 22-year-old Anthony Lamb.

Lamb was shot outside of a hookah lounge in Holland Township last September.  Lamb is related to the Kalamazoo Uber shooting survivor Tiana Carruthers.

The panel first heard from Prosecuting Attorney JoEllen Haas. Haas stated Young was itching to use his gun that night and surveillance video and witness testimony will prove he was the one that pulled the trigger.

In closing, she shared with the jury an exchange Young had with the Detective extricating him from Tennessee, where he was caught a few months after the crime.

"In the Defendant's statement to Detective Tamminga, 'Aaron asked me if I could speak to the Prosecutor to see if he could just plead guilty to manslaughter and drop the murder charge. He asked me if I could get Meech charged with something and get his case dropped to just manslaughter he would tell me where the gun was hidden,'" Haas said as she read from a document.

In the defense's opening statement, Young's attorney claimed he was acting in self defense adding if he hadn't fired back, Young would be dead and so would others.

"The defense in this case is self defense. He protected and offended himself and others by shooting back and trying to stop of what was a sudden fear of a violent attack with a deadly weapon, a firearm," Defense Attorney Tom Smith, said.

Defense did indicate in their opening statements that Young will take the stand. The trial will continue Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 9 a.m.
