Authorities warn against tampering with life rings

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WZZM) -- Red flags flew Monday at beaches along Lake Michigan, warning people about dangerous rip- currents.

At one point in the afternoon, there was concern someone was struggling in the water near the Grand Haven pier.

Someone removed a life ring from a hook, triggering a response by the Department of Public Safety.

Officers say when they arrived a group of teens scattered, so they believe it was likely a prank.

Police say unlawfully tampering with or removing a life ring is a misdemeanor, punishable by up to 93 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.
