Veteran with no living relatives laid to rest by more than a hundred people in Grand Haven

Funeral for veteran

GRAND HAVEN, MICH. - Local veterans stepped up to ensure that one of their own was properly laid to rest on Thursday, Nov. 16.

The Grand Haven American Legion reached out through Facebook inviting the public to attend the funeral of 90-year-old Gordon Hale, a WWII Navy veteran, who has no living family members.

The legion along with Systema Funeral and Cremation Services in Spring Lake hosted a beautiful ceremony at Forest Lake Cemetery.

According to the legion, roughly 150 people attended the funeral to pay their respects to Hale.

Three of those in attendance were Hale's caretakers at the Grand Haven nursing home where he spent the final years of his life.

Nikki Reyes, Mary Patricio and Sequita Henry all took part in providing care for the veteran.

"He was a big bear basically," said Patricio.

Kind, but sassy.

"Mouthy, spunky, sweet..." the women agreed.

All three women said it was an honor and a pleasure to care for him.

Hale passed away on Nov. 10, 2017.
