Déjà-cuse: Griffs look to top Syracuse in Calder Cup Finals... again.

Grand Rapids Griffins fighting for Calder Cup, part 1

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - Does that photo of Jeff Hoggan hoisting the Calder Cup in Syracuse bring back good memories? Thought so. Get ready, Griffins fans, because it could happen again.

The Grand Rapids Griffins defeated the San Jose Barracuda, Chicago Wolves, and Milwaukee Admirals on their way to their first Calder Cup Finals appearance since 2013.

In case you just jumped on the bandwagon, 2013 was the last time the Griffs won it all. And they were playing the same team they face this year, the Syracuse Crunch.

The Griffins have not faced the Crunch since then. But team leaders say it could actually work out to their advantage.

"It's more difficult with a team you play 12 times during the season to play them again in the playoffs, because everything's so close," said team captain and defenseman Nathan Paetsch.

"They know all your tendencies. It's tough for coaches to out-coach them or do different things without them knowing."

By the way, Paetsch is one of three guys playing for the Griffins now, who were also on the team when they beat Syracuse in the 2013 Finals.

Tickets are still available for this year's Calder Cup Finals. Game one at home is Friday, June 2 and game two is the following day. If necessary, Van Andel Arena will also host games six and seven.

Gates open at 6 p.m. with a 7 p.m. face-off and you can enjoy $2 dollar beers and $2 dollar hot dogs until 8 p.m. Alcohol sales end at the start of the third period.

"It's a whole citywide thing," said Griffins play-by-play broadcaster Bob Kaser. "We're all in this together and let's hope we can be celebrating here in another week and a half or two weeks."

If you can't make it to the game, Jamal Spencer and Eric Lloyd will have all your Calder Cup Finals coverage ready to go on WZZM 13 News at 11.
