GR creates plan to improve downtown safety

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) - Grand Rapids city leaders met Friday with owners of downtown entertainment establishments, emerging with what they called "an action plan that will strengthen steps already taken to maintain safety in downtown Grand Rapids."

The steps include:

- Increased lighting in private parking lots

- Increased video surveillance

- Adopting policies preventing anyone under 21 being admitted to some establishments after 9 PM

- Deploy increased police patrols in the Ionia corridor

In a press release, Kris Larson of Downtown Grand Rapids, Inc. said, "Our community has spent decades building this attractive place and positioning it to serve as a regional visitation hub. To ensure that everyone can enjoy it, we all have to accept our respective responsibilities needed to manage a safe, vibrant downtown neighborhood. Working together, as a community, on these and all issues is how we'll collectively improve this resource."
