Man sues Tavern On The Square for $25K, citing discrimination

Man Sues Tavern on the Square

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - A Grand Rapids man filed a lawsuit after he says he was stopped from entering Tavern On The Square in late July.

Marcel Price said he tried to enter the Tavern on July 30, 2016, but claims he was denied entry because he is black. He posted a video of the incident shortly there after and that video went viral.

In a previous report by WZZM 13, management of Tavern On The Square said Price tried to enter the bar too close to closing time.

Attorney Derek Witte is representing Price and says they filed a lawsuit on Aug. 9 against the establishment. The legal papers were served to the defendant on Sept. 7.

Witte says Price is asking for damages because his constitutional rights were violated. He is also asking for punitive damages and seeking relief based on things that were said about him after the incident.

The lawsuit asks for damages over $25,000.
