Monster Jam rolls into Grand Rapids for thrilling shows

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Grab your ear plugs and get ready for some noise and fun.

Monster Jam is rolling into Grand Rapids Friday night. Van Andel Arena will be home to several action packed shows over the next three days.

"[Fans] can look forward to two hours of just excitement all the time. We always have something going on," said Chad Tingler, the veteran driver behind the wheel of Grave Digger.

Grave Digger, perhaps the shows most popular truck, has been around for 35 years. It is one of several trucks that will be performing gravity-defying jumps and other tricks during this weekend's performances.

"In this kind of venue where we don't have dirt on the floor, we also have a doughnut contests to see how fast you can get the truck to spin in a circle in the same place. Then we have everyone's favorite event, which is freestyle. You can hit the cars as many times as you want in different directions and in the craziest ways you possibly can for a whole minute," said Tingler. "You have the other elements of the show as well, and I don't want to give those secrets away."

The monster trucks are custom-designed and sit on top of 66 inch tires. The typical truck generates 1,500 to 2,000 horsepower and can get up to 100 miles per hour.

Monster Jam is one of the most popular motor sports events in the country and has an extremely loyal fan base, drawing in more than 4 million fans each year.

"It's the entertainment value they get with us. You know we have a Pit Party where people can come down and see us and get up close to the trucks and kids can touch the tires and get pictures inside of them. They can get autographs from everybody. You don't get that in NASCAR you don't get that in baseball," said Tingler. "The talent we have here at Monster Jam now is just crazy so it makes my job a lot harder."

The first show is Friday, March 14 at 7:00 p.m. There are two shows Saturday, March 15. The first at 2:00 p.m. and another at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, March 16 the final show starts at 2:00 p.m. The Party in the Pits, will be held from 11:30 AM – 1:00 p.m. just prior to the 2:00 p.m. show on Saturday, March 15.
