Home & Garden Show opens, part 1

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - It is the time of year that puts Spring on the minds of people in West Michigan. For nearly four decades, the West Michigan Home and Garden Show has ushered in the unofficial start of the season, by getting people excited about warmer days ahead.

Thursday, the show will open for its 38th season at DeVos Place.

It is a one-stop shop to help people get started on projects around the house, get advice and ideas for gardening and yard work or just take in the springtime vibe.

The Home and Garden Show features 400 exhibitors, representing a variety of West Michigan businesses. In fact, more than 300 local companies will be participating in the show.

"There will be free seminars throughout the show on The Home Stage presented by national celebrities and local experts on topics from interior design to beekeeping, from DIY tips to floral arranging, from eliminating utility bills to creating outdoor living spaces, and more," according to show producers.

Other features include cooking demonstrations all four days on the Standard Kitchens Cooking Stage, featuring Chef Angus and Chef Tommy FitzGerald; The uBloom Flower Power Challenge floral design competition, hosted by WZZM 13's Catherine Behrendt and uBloom's J. Schwanke and The Garden and Art Market.

Celebrity experts including Don Engebretson (The Renegade Gardener) and Ellen Ecker Ogden (PBS' Victory Garden, and HGTV's Garden Smarts) will host seminars.

This year there will be 13 indoor gardens, including the feature garden created by the Association of Grand Rapids Landscape Professionals.

The Home and Garden Show is happening Thursday, March 2 through Sunday, March 5. Tickets are $10 for adults and $4 for kids. Kids 5 and under are free.  On Friday, an all show ticket will cost $18.

The annual 'Family Day' will be held on Saturday;  includes Free admission before noon for kids 14 and under, plus loads of activities, events, features, crafts and seminars for kids and parents and grandparents.
